Setting the Record Straight

A certain number of misapprehensions recur regularly in conversations, radio talk shows, newspaper articles and op-eds and even on-line. We will attempt to set the record straight for those that are brought to our attention.

Misapprehensions:

• There is no research to support the constructivist theory of learning.
• Reform-style teaching, a.k.a. Discovery Teaching, means that students are supposed to discover all of mathematics on their own.
• The decline in mathematical capacities of undergraduates began with the introduction of the NCTM Standards in 1989.
• All the mathematicians at UW signed a letter complaining about how bad the incoming students are. It was published in the newspaper.
• Mathematicians object to Reform Math
• Converting to Singapore Curriculum would cure Washington's Mathematics dilemmas
• Washington’s Standards rate an “F”
• Reform curricula are educationally disastrous
